Dr. James (Jim) Chen is a neurosurgeon who served for many years as the Chief Scientific Officer in a Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) oncology research company he co-founded. Dr Chen has 30 years of experience in PDT/PDI applications in many diverse areas, including oncology, ophthalmology, dermatology, obesity, and for inflammatory conditions. He is the inventor of record on many PDT, Antimicrobial Photodynamic Inactivation (aPDI), and other patents. He is the lead inventor of Singletto patents, as well.

Dr. Chen was the first to hypothesize that aPDI could be deployed as a mask and PPE decontamination method in the COVID-19 pandemic. His theory was researched and validated in the 2020 WHO-led DeMaND Study and through subsequent research. The DeMaND study is peer reviewed and published in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology (2021) and follow-on studies are peer-reviewed and published in the American Journal of Infection Control (2022) – Chen served as co-author in both.  

His credentials include a Bachelor of Arts from Evergreen State College, a Master of Science from the University of Washington, and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Washington.
